The principle of fiber optic emission

The optical fiber transmits light through total reflection (TIR), as shown below. Suppose a beam of light enters one end of an optical fiber. If the fiber is absolutely straight, the light will penetrate the medium like a large piece of glass. However, if the fiber is slightly bent, the light will eventually hit the edge of the outer surface of the fiber. If the incident angle is large enough (larger than the so-called critical angle), the light will be totally reflected and continue to propagate along the fiber. However, if the fiber bends a lot and the incident angle is small (less than the critical angle), the light will penetrate the fiber and disappear.

Note the acceptable cone angle in the figure below: This cone angle represents the angle at which incident light can deviate from the main axis and still return to the fiber. Acceptable cone angle (usually 30 degrees) for an optical fiber The light emitted by the emitted light can enter the fiber and travel farther and farther from the optical axis. Although acceptable angles can be large, fiber optic light travels best when the light sources (and receivers) are aligned on the optical spindle.
